Early Life and Family
Carole was the daughter of Dale and Mary (Sauder) Bend, growing up in a nurturing household in Dekalb. She had two siblings, Richard Bend and Phyllis Christensen, who both preceded her in death.
On September 10, 1966, Carole married LaVern R. Jordal in Waterman, IL, marking the beginning of a loving partnership. Together, they raised two children, Sean and Jason, who carry forward her spirit and values.
Carole's family was her heartbeat. Her husband, LaVern, her children, and her grandchildren — Alexandra, Ethan, Kelsie, and Lauren — were at the center of her world. Sunday family dinners were a cherished tradition, where stories and laughter flowed freely, forging strong bonds.
A Passion for Nursing
Carole's professional path began after graduating from Waterman High School when she pursued her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse at the Copley School of Nursing at Copley Memorial Hospital in Aurora, IL.
Graduating in 1968, she embarked on an impressive 40-year journey at the Dekalb Clinic, primarily in the surgical department. During her career, she cared for thousands of patients, often tending to 20-30 individuals a day. Her patients knew her not just as a nurse but as a friend. Carole's commitment to healthcare exemplified her dedication to helping those in need.
A Lifelong Community Contributor
Beyond her nursing career, Carole poured her energy into her community. As an active member of Rollo Congregational Church, she served in various leadership roles and taught Sunday School. Her faith was the cornerstone of her character, and she encouraged others to serve with the same spirit.
Carole also made lasting friendships through the Leland Junior Woman's Club, participating in community projects such as organizing local charity events that raised over $10,000 to support families in need. Even after retirement, she remained active by joining the board of the Saddlebrook Unit 23 Association, ensuring her community stayed vibrant and connected.
The Baker and Artist
In addition to her professional and community commitments, Carole had a talent for baking and decorating. She became renowned for creating beautiful cakes for weddings and graduations, often collaborating with her neighbor, Eleanor Fritsch, to produce over 50 custom cakes each year. These sweet treats celebrated significant moments, making her a treasured figure in countless families.
Carole also had a passion for arts and crafts. Her creative spirit thrived through painting, stained glass, and ceramics. Many family members still cherish her handmade pieces, each serving as a personal reminder of Carole's talent and love.

Carole's zest for life included a passion for travel and exploration. Her home was a welcoming space filled with laughter, where family and friends gathered. She embarked on numerous adventures, from road trips across the U.S. to exploring European destinations, often returning with stories and souvenirs to share.
