Dr. Christopher Colville Mathewson, known affectionately as "Chips," took an extraordinary journey filled with exploration, hard work, and discovery. Born on August 12, 1941, in Warren Township, New Jersey, Dr. Mathewson's early years on a 78-acre tree farm shaped not only his future career but also his character.

Growing up in a rural setting instilled in him a deep appreciation for nature and a strong work ethic. With his parents, George and Elsa, he enjoyed outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. These experiences didn't just provide him joy; they laid the foundation for his understanding of natural processes, pivotal for a career in geology.

As a child, Chips showed remarkable mechanical skills, operating everything from tractors to a vintage 1930s cable-driven backhoe. This early connection with machinery hinted at his future academic pursuits in engineering.

Upon graduating high school, Dr. Mathewson left the familiar comforts of home, heading to Cleveland, Ohio. He humorously described his early academic tenure as having "a rip-snorten 2-point-something" GPA, a far cry from his later achievements. At the Case Institute of Technology, he initially focused on civil engineering, motivated by dreams of developing the family farm.

The real turning point came unexpectedly. While at Case, Dr. Mathewson enrolled in a geology class for fun. This simple choice ignited a passion for rocks, soil, and the stories told through the Earth’s layers, transitioning him into a full-fledged geology major. His deep interest in earth sciences would shape his future contributions to the field.

Following his engineering degree, Dr. Mathewson participated in a summer fellowship centered around physical oceanography. He took a geology cruise along the Hudson River, where he collected clay samples that ended up being pivotal for his Master's thesis in Engineering Geology, successfully completed in 1965. His research not only contributed to academic knowledge but also aimed at addressing real-world problems like sediment transport and environmental changes.

Dr. Mathewson's journey was enriched by community service, too. While studying in Tucson, Arizona, he volunteered with the Pima County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Team. One particular mission to locate a missing child deeply impacted him. The experience solidified his commitment to serving the community, emphasizing the importance of helping others—a lesson he carried throughout his career.

After obtaining his Master’s degree, Dr. Mathewson joined the National Ocean Survey as a commissioned officer. Achieving the rank of Lieutenant, he faced unique challenges, including charting the Pacific Ocean for hazards. It was during these expeditions that he first crossed paths with his future wife, Janet Olmstead, aboard a responding vessel. Their wedding in Hawaii in 1968 marked not just a personal milestone but a shared life adventure in the beautiful islands for another year.

Upon returning to Tucson after his military service, Dr. Mathewson focused on completing his doctorate in Geological Engineering. His academic work further enriched his expertise, enabling him to contribute to progressive studies in geology.

Dr. Mathewson’s story exemplifies how life’s unpredictable paths can lead to monumental discoveries both personally and professionally. His commitment to exploring one’s passion, seeking knowledge, and embracing community responsibilities serves as a remarkable example for others.

Reflecting on the journey of Dr. Christopher Colville Mathewson reveals that the terrains of our lives—both natural and personal—harbor opportunities for growth and understanding. Each unexpected twist can lead to profound insights and joy.

Dr. Mathewson's legacy encourages us to explore the various landscapes around us—be they in nature or career. His life reminds us that true fulfillment often awaits those brave enough to wander off the beaten path and embrace the adventure of learning and discovery.
